According to Brian Wilson, that modular approach to songwriting is both the album’s mission and its undoing.

Gevorderden improviseren het best zonder leider (Advanced people improvise best without leader)

12 dec 2011 -> nu.nl

Sounds Heard: The Beach Boys—The Smile Sessions

 December 8, 2011 -> newmusicbox.org
Randall Roberts, in one of several pieces on The Smile Sessions that ran recently in The Los Angeles Times, has stated that “every library of American recording history needs this; university composition departments, music professors, budding recording engineers and composers should study it.”

SMiLE is so good, it makes Pet Sounds stink!

That was an emotional statement once made by Dennis Wilson.
Now, let's try a rational scientific calculation, based upon my own preferences (which of course are very subjective).
The question is, which album is better?

I made a TOP 30 of SMiLE and Pet Sounds songs all together:

The Wrecking Crew left its musical mark on pop culture

06 November 2011 -> goldminemag.com
If you were asked to name the best bassists in rock music, Paul McCartney and John Entwistle would quickly come to mind. Ask for legendary rock guitarists and Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen would be uttered frequently. Seek the names of some great rock drummers and chances are you’d hear Keith Moon, John Bonham and Ringo Starr.

But if you browsed my list, you’ll find bassists Carol Kaye and Chuck Berghofer, guitarists Tommy Tedesco, Al Casey and Bill Pitman, and drummers Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer and Jim Gordon at the top. After scratching your head in puzzlement, I’d probably hear, “Who the hell are they?” as a common response.

Their names may be unfamiliar, but you’ve played air guitar, pencil-on-desk drums and hummed along to hundreds of classic hit records, commercial jingles and TV and movie themes from the late ’50s throughout the mid-’70s on which these and several other key session musicians performed. They are:

Behind The Sounds update!

It's been awhile since I've listened to the amazingly great BehindTheSounds channel. Now I see (the long awaited) part 2 of God Only Knows is out (since July), and the newest is I Know There's An Answer! (since August)

Maybe with all 13 tracks done, it would be a nice document on a dvd?

How to Steal a SMiLE : An Alternate History of The Beach Boys’ Lost Classic

2011/11/30 -> relix.com
There are those who maintain that the “Mona Lisa” on display in the Louvre in Paris is a fake, replaced by a forgery after its daring 1911 theft. The appearance of The Beach Boys’ SMiLE during this shopping season might raise similar eyebrows, but it will undoubtedly induce equally deep ear-to-ear expressions of happiness a few inches below.
