Is the Beach Boys' Mike Love a hero or villain?

6/9/2011 -> clatl.com

Why have you been pegged the bad guy?

Back in the '60s, there were two camps in the Beach Boys: the Wilson Brothers, who were into drugs, and [Al] Jardine, Love and [Bruce] Johnston, who were not. I never appreciated the effects that LSD and other drugs had on our cousins.

ENDLESS SUMMER: MIKE LOVE ON WHY BEACH BOYS MUSIC HAS OUTLASTED SO MANY OTHERS

QUOTE:
Besides the Everly Brothers and Little Richard, the group Love and the others respected most was The Temptations.

“They were unbelievably great. Ball of Confusion, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Cloud Nine. The Temptations, in my opinion, were on a par with The Beatles and the Beach Boys. They just didn’t get the print we did.”

THE BEACH BOYS BRING SHOW TO THE AQUARIUS

Mike Love interview (for concert promotion)

QUOTE:

Q.: Speaking of the Beatles, the movie Across the Universe weaves a story around Beatles music, and “Mama Mia!” is all Abba music. What about a musical with Beach Boys music?

M.L.: Actually we’re working on a movie that would be done to Beach Boys music— a big Hollywood movie. That will be interesting. It should come to pass in the next year or two.

IN FULL MIKE LOVE INTERVIEW

QUOTE:

Performing so many gigs indicates a real passion for performing?
Mike Love: This year we will probably do 150 to 160 shows. After Ireland we’re going to Finland and Denmark and then Sweden and then down to the Canary Islands and the Spanish Coast and back to Sweden and who knows from there.
What we like to do every night is prove we can recreate those songs like they’re meant to be sung, like the recordings.
We have an excellent musical director and lead guitarist to make sure every part is what it should be and we have got nothing but compliments recently on how fantastic the show sounds and [people saying] that the group has never sounded better.
To see how people respond so beautifully to your efforts and to see that reaction from all ages is really, really fantastic.
Obviously we get to travel to some pretty cool places and see the world and obviously we make a living doing it and those are two good things, but the special part of it is recreating those songs and doing the absolute best job that we can and seeing the audience join in and have a great time with us.

THE BEACH BOYS' MIKE LOVE: STEPPING OUT OF THE SURF

"Last week in Vancouver we sold out the Canadian National Exhibition Hall twice.
We had 17,500 for each show and over 5,000 additional fans had to be turned away.
We broke the Beatles' record set in 1964," Mike Love said in his Santa Barbara home.

THE BEACH BOYS “GO GREEN” PRESS CONFERENCE

One of America’s greenest small towns is about to get a lot greener.
Iconic rocker Beach Boy Mike Love will be named “Energy Czar for the Day” during the Beach Boys Labor Day benefit concert on Monday, September 7, in Fairfield, Iowa.
Love will launch Fairfield’s initiative to become “America’s Model Sustainable City.”

Mike Love and Fairfield Mayor Ed Malloy held a news conference on Friday, August 14, to announce their plans to turn Fairfield into a model city of sustainability.
Mayor Malloy is a national leader in the drive towards green.
The oil broker was recently named one of the “15 Greenest Mayors in America”—along with the big-city mayors of New York, San Francisco, and Seattle—by the msn.com for the creation of Fairfield’s “Green Strategic Plan.”

PAUL MCCARTNEY, RINGO STARR PERFORM TOGETHER IN SUPPORT OF TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION

NEW YORK The short list of times that two ex-Beatles have performed together in public since the band's breakup got a little longer on Saturday night, as Ringo Starr joined Paul McCartney for three songs at the "Paul McCartney and Friends: Change Begins Within" benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall.

Canadian photographer and director Paul Saltzman was 23 when he went off to India in 1968 to meditate at the ashram of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
While he was there, the Beatles showed up, along with Mia Farrow, Donovan, Mike Love of the Beach Boys and various consorts. Saltzman connected with the celebrated Liverpudlians, who let him photograph them as they kicked back and made music, attired in white-cotton garb, sandals and flower necklaces.
Years later, Saltzman published the pictures from that fruitful sojourn - during which the Beatles wrote a slew of songs, many of which they recorded on "The White Album" - in his book "The Beatles in India." A bunch of them are on view through the end of the year at the San Francisco Art Exchange, at 458 Geary St.

FUN, FUN, FUN WITH REVIVED BEACH BOYS

WORCESTER— Surf’s up!
That was the watchword Saturday night at the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts on Southbridge Street as The Beach Boys rode a wave of nostalgia into the venue.
It’s hard to believe that the original Beach Boys band was formed in 1961. It’s even harder to believe that internal squabbling over the years has led to at least three different bands playing Beach Boys material.

GOOD VIBRATIONS

Beach Boys’ Mike Love has fond memories of Worcester

Wouldn’t it be nice if we were younger? You won’t hear Mike Love singing such a lament, although he does use phrases such as “back in the day” and “those were the days” once in a while. Instead, Love, 67, a founding member of the Beach Boys, looks back with satisfaction at the group’s successes and enjoys the fact that people are still playing Beach Boys songs to this day.

The other day he noted that his daughter, Ambha, had come home from her fourth-grade class where the children had voted the Beach Boys number “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” (which continues “if we were older and we wouldn’t have to wait so long”) favorite class song.
