wiki: The civilian band version has Bobby Hackett solo in the middle. "Rhapsody in Blue" from the civilian band is not the entire work, but rather a section of the work arranged to fit on a 10" 78 rpm record. It was released as Victor 20-1529-A.
I've read (somewhere on messageboards) that Glenn Miller's version was the one that Brian Wilson knew as a young boy and gave him inspiration. Here's a link for...

others say his fave version in the 60's was by Stanley Black with the London Festival Orchestra http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=12863

+ News (December 2009?) from http://www.beachboysbritain.org.uk/news.html:
Prior to embarking on this recent jaunt, Brian and the band spent a few days in Oceanway (the old Western) studio, recording seven basic tracks for an album tentatively titled Wilson Sings Gershwin, these included:
"I Loves You Porgy", "Summertime", "Someone to Watch Over Me", "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off", "I Got Plenty Of Nothing" and 'the pretty section from "Rhapsody in Blue"'.
