BRIAN WILSON REACHES BACK FOR 'GERSHWIN' PROJECT

In 2004, Brian Wilson scored a critical and commercial victory by releasing a completed version of "Smile," the legendary "Pet Sounds" follow-up he'd originally begun work on in 1966.
Six years later, the Beach Boys mastermind is reaching even further back in time for his latest project, "Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin," due Aug. 17 from Walt Disney Records.

'MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN': BRIAN WILSON AND GEORGE GERSHWIN

CD promotional interview

The album title alone is enough to make pop-music pundits drool, pairing two of the 20th century's most celebrated tunesmiths: Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin.

The recording itself, which arrives Aug. 17, was a "labor of love" for Wilson, 68, who was a George Gershwin fan long before he was a Beach Boy or had even discovered the piano.
"Before I could play music, I could hear it," Wilson says, and Gershwin became a hero when he first heard Rhapsody in Blue at about age 4.

Rhapsody In Blue

1943 or 1944, Glenn Miller version

1924 written by: George Gershwin

youtube.com/watch?v=IEpdXgj94xE&fmt=18
wiki: The civilian band version has Bobby Hackett solo in the middle. "Rhapsody in Blue" from the civilian band is not the entire work, but rather a section of the work arranged to fit on a 10" 78 rpm record. It was released as Victor 20-1529-A.
I've read (somewhere on messageboards) that Glenn Miller's version was the one that Brian Wilson knew as a young boy and gave him inspiration. Here's a link for...

COVERING CLASSICS BY THE GERSHWINS IS A DREAM JOB FOR BRIAN WILSON

QUOTE:

“Rhapsody in Blue” will be done a cappella, Wilson said, an artistic choice that should thrill fans of his vocals-only pieces, like the majestic “Our Prayer” from “Smile” or the soaring “One for the Boys” from “Brian Wilson.”

Foskett can’t wait for the vocal sessions to begin. “That’s where I’m really going to enjoy it,” he said. “As cool as the tracks are that we’ve laid down, I think the real genius of Brian’s touch and arrangement skills is going to come into play when he starts doing the vocals.”

BRIAN WILSON TO FINISH SOME GEORGE GERSHWIN SONGS

Wilson plans to finish and record at least two songs on an album of Gershwin music that could be released next year.

In a surprise union of two quintessentially American composers from different eras, one the 1960s mastermind of "Good Vibrations," the other the Jazz Age creator of "Rhapsody in Blue," former Beach Boy Brian Wilson has been authorized by the estate of George Gershwin to complete unfinished songs Gershwin left behind when he died in 1937.
