SEVEN MEMORABLE GEORGE GERSHWIN INTERPRETATIONS

Summertime and there's never a shortage of Gershwin performances at pops and jazz concerts across the country.
But who, we wondered, has also "re-imagined" Gershwin in the rock era beyond the song "Summertime," which has been marvelously rendered by Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Bobby Womack and Angelique Kidjo?

Here's a SoundSpike 7 list of impressive Gershwin interpretations in the rock 'n' roll era.

7. "But Not for Me," Elvis Costello (1994)

6. "Embraceable You," Laura Nyro (1994)

5. "It Ain't Necessarily So," Sun Ra & His Arkestra (1960)

4. "I've Got a Crush on You," Bill Frisell & Petra Haden (2003)

3. "Our Love is Here to Stay," Four Freshman (1955)

2. "Someone to Watch Over Me," Jimmy Scott (1992)

1. "I Loves You, Porgy," Nina Simone (1957)

Electric Light Orchestra - Birmingham Blues

(repost)
According to wikipedia it is inspired by Gershwin:
Quote: The central theme of Rhapsody in Blue is used as a riff in The Electric Light Orchestra's "Birmingham Blues" off their 1977 hit album Out of the Blue. (listen at 0:28!)
According to myself it is also inspired by John Fogerty's 'Rockin' All Over The World' (1975, covered in 1977 by Status Quo and in 1983 by Carl Wilson)

1977

Written by: Jeff Lynn (&...?)

Cosimo Matassa Interview

2005

Interview

COSIMO MATASSA RECALLS ENGINEERING THE SOUND OF NEW ORLEANS

Born 13 April 1926, New Orleans, Louisiana. He 'invented' R&R together with Fats Domino in 1949

QUOTE:
As a self-taught engineer and studio operator, Matassa, 83, was pivotal in developing the New Orleans sound during the fertile rock and R&B era of the '50s and '60s. He has a more modest take.

"There were great musicians everywhere you turned," he says. "They made me look good."
