NYC NOISE-POP BAND LAMENTS SEXUAL PURITY ON DEBUT

In the world of independent music, the easiest way for a band to seem forward thinking is often for them to look backward. Some of the most critically acclaimed indie records of the last decade have all prescribed to this formula; the Hold Steady's "Boys And Girls In America" drew heavily from the back catalogs of Bruce Springsteen and was almost universally beloved. Radiohead's self-released "In Rainbows" was hailed as being the most Radiohead-sounding Radiohead record since 1995's "The Bends." Fleet Foxes' self-titled debut ended 2008 as the number one album on hype.com, an web site which forms its ratings based on those of thousands of other critical sources, and it was a record that seamlessly blended the Americana-rock textures of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young with the harmony-laden pastiche of the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds."

BRIAN WILSON: AN ART BOOK

Brian Wilson: An Art Book is a reader on Brian Wilson’s life and work written from a contemporary art perspective by artists and leading art writers.
It’s also a musee imaginaire of works from the 1960s to today by twenty-six artists - using the pages of the book as gallery walls - that echoes the trajectory of Wilson’s work and the milieu it so uniquely evokes.
Significantly half the artists featured come from Los Angeles.

WILL THE REAL REUNION BAND PLEASE STAND UP?

Right: these three have all their own Beach Boys Bands: Alan, Mike & Brian

Multiple versions of the same re-formed act have become a problem for promoters, with different incarnations of the Beach Boys, War and Jefferson Airplane each claiming to be "authentic"

FLEETWOOD MAC REUNITES FOR 'RUMOURS' AND 'UNFINISHED BUSINESS'

'Unfinished business' reunites the band

As the relationship between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham goes, so goes Fleetwood Mac.
The band, formed as a British blues-rock outfit in 1967, has a history that reads like a soap opera script. Band members have literally gone crazy. Some have gone AWOL. Others have slept with one another. Marriages were broken. More than 73 million records have been sold. And still the quarrels continue.
Even a 2004 tour that raked in $22 million ended in acrimony, with a fed-up Nicks saying she was through and Buckingham returning to his solo career.

STEVIE WONDER'S 'SKETCHES': A CLASSICAL MELODIC GEM

Obama will give musician Gershwin Prize

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Stevie Wonder knows from classics. Classical, too, as it turns out.
Monday night at the Library of Congress, the Motown legend spoke of a longtime "love for classical music" -- of listening to Stravinsky, Bach and Beethoven.
And then Wonder ambled onstage at the library's Coolidge Auditorium and gave the world-premiere performance of "Sketches of a Life," a classical composition that he began writing in 1976, when he was still at the peak of his pop-songwriting powers.

SONG STORIES - "MRS. O'LEARY'S COW" (2004)

From the album Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE

Of all the interesting stories and rumors that surround the mysterious and turbulent Post-Pet Sounds era Beach Boys’ classics, “Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow” has to be one of the most compelling.
“Mrs. O’Leary” is a song that's origins trace back to the mythical lost album SMiLE.

THE NEW P*RNOGRAPHERS TAKE ON ALL CHALLENGERS

Quote:

"I'm not even remotely as good as Brian Wilson, just to clear that up," Newman says. "But, it's something to strive towards... he made pop music that unfolded in interesting ways.
A lot of people don't know this. Animal Collective are considered a very strange band, but they sound like the Beach Boys and they sound like the Beach Boys because the Beach Boys were strange.
The Beach Boys had a combination of the strange and the beautiful that I think I strive for more than anything else, even though I don't want to sound like them.
But that quality that they have... like 'God Only Knows' is just the most strange and beautiful song and it's beautiful in not a very obvious way. I think that's the music that I love the most."
With the types of harmonies that the Beach Boys ended up utilizing, it's no surprise that the P*rnos often sport multiple vocal lines and push different members to the front of the stage to take the mic. Still, Newman remains in control.

DIY IMPROVISED SOUND

Intro --- there's no such thing as a wrong note

Anyone can make music . Of course the music that's produced might not be to your taste , but let's not be critical . What discourages a lot of people is that the music they make isn't what they wanted to happen .This is a problem that affects even the best musicians - the music that comes out of your instrument isn't exactly as you may have wanted it to be .

VOLATILE KINKS

British group mourned the failure to preserve a lost England

In the 24 years since Bob Dylan's Biograph kicked off the boxed-set craze, every pop act of any significance has been enshrined in what has become the audio equivalent of the coffee-table book—every act, that is, except the Kinks.

Enter Picture Book (Sanctuary), a chronological, six-disc overview of the group's 30-year career, which was released in December, nearly 19 years after the original lineup's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and 12 years after the final lineup's breakup.

BURT BACHARACH STRIPS DOWN TO TALK ROBBIE WILLIAMS, MONEY AND MARRIAGE

Our correspondent encounters the master of smooth listening Burt Bacharach oiling himself by his Los Angeles swimming pool

Burt Bacharach is naked. Or rather, he is very nearly naked. And as hard as I’m trying to ignore this fact, it is proving to be extremely difficult.
I could simply tell you, for example, that the 80-year-old songwriter — arguably the most successful who has ever lived — is sitting by the pool of his $8 million home in Pacific Palisades, a clifftop suburb of Los Angeles.

WHY THE FED CAN'T PREVENT A DEFLATIONARY DEPRESSION

In June of 1966 (similar to the warm sunny days of summer in 1929 and 2007), Brian Wilson produced the Beach Boys’ single “Good Vibrations.”
Capturing the positive feelings of the day, it quickly became a number one hit. But something had changed in 1967 when the Beach Boys moved on to their next album: Smile.

BAD GIRL HITS BEARSVILLE

As the lead voice of archetypal girl group the Ronettes, Ronnie Spector, who will perform at the Bearsville Theater on February 14, rode her infamous producer and sometime husband Phil Spector’s celebrated “Wall of Sound” to the peak of the charts, belting out such classic hits as “Baby, I Love You,” “Walking in the Rain,” “I Can Hear Music,” and what is perhaps the most uplifting and transcendentally perfect pop single of all time, 1963’s “Be My Baby.”

BRIAN WILSON SCORES A TRIUMPH IN HOMETOWN SHOW

"This is my hometown," Brian Wilson said as he sat behind his keyboard. Indeed.
And the Los Angeles crowd was treated to a two-hour soundtrack of the city from its main musical hero, highlighted -- yes, highlighted -- by a new half-hour-plus song suite that's as effective as anything Wilson has created in decades.
