BRIAN WILSON 1999 INTERVIEW

QUOTE:

CAROLE: I know that you were influenced by the Beatles and that they were definitely very influenced by you. Can you imagine how your career would have gone if there had been no Beatles?
BRIAN: No, I can't. Not at all. They put us on the map almost. They gave us an inspiration to make music.
CAROLE: Two of your early influences were Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Do you still listen to them?
BRIAN: I don't still listen to them, but I still think about them. I think the R&B people, were the real pioneers of rock 'n' roll. People don't recognize that much, but it's really the truth. Most of your really good music in the '50s was Black music, and it's amazing what they did. They were innovators.

MALCOLM GLADWELL: LESSONS FROM FLEETWOOD MAC

So what did Malcolm Gladwell talk about during his keynote speech at NECC? Fleetwood Mac. No, really. Looking closely at the evolution and success of the late 60s rock band can teach us three important points about creating meaningful learning environments, he said.

The first is that effort is more important than talent.

HE WRITES SONGS THAT MAKE THE WHOLE WORLD SING

EVEN IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO HE IS!

Bruce Johnston is a true musical lifer. The longtime member of The Beach Boys has been cranking out widely embraced radio fare since the early 1960s, scoring his first hit under his own name in 1963 with novelty number "Surfers' Pajama Party."

However, it is a d(?)itty that most people think Barry Manilow penned that's forever ensured his professional legacy, namely 1975's monster smash "I Write The Songs," which will performed and cherished in cocktail lounges and blasted by easy listening stations long after each of us are dust.

FLUTES OFFER CLUES TO STONE-AGE MUSIC

At least 35,000 years ago, in the depths of the last ice age, the sound of music filled a cave in what is now southwestern Germany, the same place and time early Homo sapiens were also carving the oldest known examples of figurative art in the world.

Music and sculpture — expressions of artistic creativity, it seems — were emerging in tandem among some of the first modern humans when they began spreading through Europe or soon thereafter.

HEROES & VILLAINS

NL

ROCK 101: THE BEATLES VS. THE BEACH BOYS

During the middle of the 1960s, the "competition" between the Beatles and the Beach Boys was largely a creation of fan magazines.
American publishers knew they could put Paul-vs.-Brian on the cover and watch the copies fly, even if the story inside turned out to be warmed-over speculation or utter nonsense.

THE GREATEST MUSIC YOU'VE NEVER HEARD PART I

EVEN great artists don't release every piece of music they record, which is a good thing - we don't need to hear every demo, take or misfire they've ever committed to tape or hard drive because, let's face it, even great artists have off days.

It's becoming more common for these forgotten tunes and/or albums to see the light of day. Nirvana's With The Lights Out box set revealed some grungey gems amid Kurt Cobain's dodgy boombox sketches, while the deluxe two-disc versions of Jeff Buckley's Grace and Live At Sine have some magic that deserves to be heard.

But in honour of the many lost masterpieces, unfinished symphonies and hidden hits still out there, Musicology has compiled this list of the greatest music you've never heard... part one.

MUZIEKPROFESSOR OP TEENSLIPPERS

NL
