BUSY DOIN’ NOTHIN

A Day in the Life of Brian Wilson:
The Beach Boys - "Busy Doin’ Nothin"

The shadow of Pet Sounds loomed large on the Beach Boys after it was released in 1966. How do you follow-up one of the greatest, if not THE greatest album of all-time?

BEACH BOY BRIAN WILSON PUTS AND KEEPS IT TOGETHER IN THE STUDIO

Tormented hero comes home:
Beach Boy Brian Wilson puts and keeps it together in the studio

“Brian Wilson is not a chatterbox,” his publicist said recently in one of the great understatements of all time. So who cares? He’s been channeling all his thoughts into producing classic records for four decades, music that stand alongside some of the great compositions of the 20th century. And that’s more than enough.

WHEN WILSON WENT ON THE LAM

In June 1978, Beach Boy Brian Wilson — without telling his wife or bandmates — decided to escape his life and hitchhike to Mexico.
He wound up in San Diego, according to Steven Gaines’s biography Heroes and Villains, which describes a confused pop-star millionaire wandering the city, “barefoot and unwashed.”

'THIS LAND' CELEBRATED BY SEEGER, CROWD

The famous folk singer from Fishkill, from whom the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. first heard the song "We Shall Overcome," shared some advice Sunday with the man who inherited the famous civil rights leader's staggering legacy.

On Sunday, Pete Seeger performed "This Land is Your Land" with grandson Tao Rodriguez-Seeger and Bruce Springsteen, during a concert at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington staged as part of the presidential inauguration activities.

TRIBUTES TO LEGENDARY SINGER CAP TRAVELING DISPLAY

Words and music, powerful music, closed out the Smithsonian Institution show "New Harmonies" at the Louisiana State Oil and Gas Museum in Oil City on Sunday.

The music was by Lead Belly, the singular and impassioned folk singer who was born Huddie Ledbetter and is buried just a dozen miles from the museum site, and the words were as much by him as anyone else, voiced by his great-nephew Alvin Singh.

BLUES, POWER-POP AND LOVE SONGS MELD ON 'WORKING ON A DREAM'

"Working On a Dream," Bruce Springsteen (Columbia) THREE AND A HALF STARS

"Working On a Dream" is Bruce Springsteen's "White Album."
Like The Beatles' 1968 double album, it's full of surprises, covers an exceptionally broad range of musical styles, and is both deeply serious and, occasionally, whimsical.

Brian Wilson charms with nostalgia at the Grammy Museum
When it comes to living rock 'n' roll legends, few hold as much allure as Brian Wilson. The pop hits, the grand orchestrations, the battles with drugs and mental health issues, the lost albums and the recent career rebirth all make for a compellingly colorful narrative.

"In the period 1963-1994, Jobim composed a hundred some-odd pieces of music that, taking into account those he had completed earlier, reached two hundred and thirty recorded compositions. BRIAN WILSON

Like Paul McCartney and Sting, Brian Wilson is one of rock &roll's most important figures who just happens to play bass.
The Beach Boys mastermind and studio savant held down the low end in the group's early years-and while at the time he didn't exactly reinvent the way the instrument is played, later on he left his mark on the bass legacy through session musicians, most notably Carol Kaye, who played his carefully composed bass lines note-for-note.

CHRISTIAN FENNESZ

“I totally love to work with things that can go wrong or go random.”
Christian Fennesz is an Austrian guitarist and electronic musician. His 2001 album, Endless Summer, is one of this decade’s definitive recordings. Its warm, melodic ambience coupled with startling passages of crackling electronics and noise were focused into a then nearly unheard of pop context. The album’s 2004 follow-up, Venice, marked a noticeable change toward a darker, more ethereal tone in his work.

BEATLES NEWS BRIEF 1/10/09 WITH BRIAN WILSON NEWS

Quote:
"On Brian Wilson's forthcoming "That Lucky Old Sun" DVD coming out Jan. 27, one of the special features is a MySpace "Artist On Artist" clip with Wilson and Zooey Deschanel taped at the Hollywood Bowl. Besides the fact the Beach Boys played there, Wilson mentions he saw the Beatles there, as well.
If you loved the Wilson album, which we certainly did, you'll love the DVD. The "Going Home" documentary, which includes comments from his current band members and old friends such as Billy Hinsche and Mickey Dolenz, is especially illuminating of a guy whose life has had its share of shadows. Brian Wilson is really back this time. There's no doubt."

A GOOD DAY FOR CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'

A sunny climate like that in Southern California comes to mind on a day like this. Here are five songs with California in the title:

1) “California Dreamin’” — The Mamas and the Papas had ugly winter weather in mind when they penned this ode about native L.A. while living in cold, gray New York.

2) “It never rains in Southern California” — Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood had the right idea.

3) “California Girls” — Surfing, cars and girls were staples of the Beach Boys.

4) “Southern California” — Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys returns to familiar themes in this song off his brand-new album.

5) “California Stars” — Billy Bragg and Wilco put music to lyrics by Woody Guthrie, who never recorded or wrote down what he had in mind for a tune.
