Surfer Girl was the third album for the Beach Boys but it’s where the magic really begins for this group.

It rep­re­sents the first time that Brian Wilson was allowed to assume sole pro­duc­tion respon­si­bil­i­ties on a Beach Boys album.

"It's sounding really good in the studio," he says. "The tracks are pretty much done. We're still working on finishing up all the vocals, but it's sounding fantastic so far."

To Wilson's ears, "The word for this new album is mellow. It's the '60s revisited, kind of a dip back into the past, but it retains a little bit of the 2000s, too. So all in all, it's a very good album."

 Q. Are the songs written and just waiting to be arranged and recorded?

Wilson: Most of them have been written. We’re going to have to write a few new ones, but most of them have been written. On the album, one song flows into another and that flows into another like that, until it’s over, until there’s no more album.

The Beach Boys Are Back!

The Beach Boys, who recently announced they're reuniting this year for a new album and tour to mark their 50th anniversary, have chosen to make their first live appearance together in more than 20 years on the Grammy Awards this Sunday. The legendary group, comprised of Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks, will perform alongside Maroon 5 and Grammy-nominated band Foster the People on the telecast, which airs on CBS starting at 8 p.m. ET/PT.


In addition, Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, jazz artist Diana Krall and funk star Maceo Parker have been added to the lineup of performers on Sunday's telecast. Reba McEntire, Diana Ross, rapper/actor Common and actress Taraji P. Henson have been added as presenters.

Experts say the painting was completed at the same time as Leonardo’s original

Bruno Mottin, the head conservator at the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France, believes that the most likely painter of the Prado copy was one of Leonardo’s two favourite pupils.

Mottin proposes that it was either Andrea Salai, who originally joined Leonardo’s studio in 1490 and probably became his lover, or Francesco Melzi, who joined around 1506. If the Prado replica is eventually attributed to Melzi, it suggests a late date for the original.

What the copy reveals

The Madrid copy of the Mona Lisa is important for what it tells us about Leonardo’s studio practice. The production of a second version, painted alongside the original, is intriguing. It adds credence to Martin Kemp’s theory that Leonardo may also have had a hand in both versions of The Madonna of the Yarnwinder, 1501-07, one owned by the Duke of Buccleuch and the other by a New York private owner (formerly in the Lansdowne collection).
