PARADISO AMSTERDAM: THIS BLOG'S REVIEW

AMSTERDAM, PARADISO, JULY THE 6TH, 2009
(SOLD OUT 1500 VISITORS) * * * * *

SETLIST (& comments)

All Day (Working In The Sun)
(a hidden track from the TLOS cd)

California Girls
(BAM! The crowd went nuts, it's a great happy tune. Welcome back the good vibes)

Catch a Wave

Girl don't tell me
(A solo vocal, a nice contrast between al those harmonies)

Dance Dance Dance(great rocker, maybe it could have more prominent use of sleighbells, but Nelson Bragg was not at the concert)

Surfer Girl

In My Room

Salt Lake City

409
(Brian in a good, bluesy, lower voice)

Custom Machine
(409, LDC, Shut Down and this song were nice and interesting 'new' additions to the setlist, you didn't wanna miss a note!)

Soul Searchin'
(Can't help visualize how Solomon Burke would sing this song. (I've heard his version on the North Sea Jazz Festival) Brian is faithfull to his own style, but could have a bit more soul...)

Desert Drive
(Very well done, but a poor song, not as great as Salt Lake City. Sounds like the Fantastic Baggys or any other anonymous surf group who try to emulate the surf sound. But hey, this is the master himself!)

Don't Worry Baby
(Nicely sung by Jeff Foskett, the people liked it very much)

I Get Around(Some songs, like Do It Again, are alway fresh and great. This one is the other catogory, if it is heard too often)

Sail On Sailor

Marcella
(Brian said: A great song by our great band for the greatest audience. He did not exaggerate! A very powerful tune. Featuring Scott Benett's guitarsolo and Jeff Foskett on cowbell)

Do It Again
(I spotted some new harmony improvements and counter bass lines by Brian, it worked very well)

(INTERVAL)

Little Girl I Once Knew
(A great tune)

Then I Kissed Her
(Brian and Jeff trade lead voices, nice vibrato by Jeff)

Imagination
(I don't like this song very much, but the performance was 100% better then the studio version, Darian was nice on the keyboard intro)

Add Some Music
(Very good vocals (like the original), the bridge (music, when you're alone etc) was this time spot on and in perfect pitch, a stellar performance)

When I grow Up
(Transition: Brian directed a fade at the end, and then started ...)

All Summer Long
(and everybody was clapping along)

Shut Down
(beautiful harmonies on the bridge)

Little Deuce Coupe(It's hard to capture this song with such a big band. The album version is a very light upbeat rocker)

Do You Wanna Dance
(a crowd pleaser)

Sloop John B
(This was the biggest hit in Holland: NO 1 in 1966! So, the crowd liked this very ...)

Wouldn't It Be Nice
(another lead by Jeff Foskett, Brian on the bridge, great performance.)

God Only Knows
(The emotional highpoint of the concert, vocally a nice and sensitive performance, it received a very long applause)

Midnight's Another Day
(almost impossible, but another giant step in songwriting and vocal arranging)

Going Home
(This time with less moogbass sounds (or was it low in the mix?), but I think this way it's more energetic and alive)

Southern California
(another impressive composition, all those beautiful interwoven harmonies)

Good Vibrations
(people liked this familiar song very much)

(1ST ENCORE)Johnny B Goode(classic Chuck Berry tune)

Help Me Rhonda
(spotlights on the 1500 people who where singing and clapping along)

Barbara Ann

Surfin' USA
(Brian almost swinging like I remember the old 60's clips)

Fun Fun Fun
(This was the first concert that I really enjoyed the familiar hits from the encores, Brian voice sounded strong and good in the blend/mix)

(2ND ENCORE)
Love and Mercy
(voices & music = love)

I'M VERY GLAD I WENT TO THIS CONCERT. IT WAS REALLY GREAT. THE ONLY SONG I REALLY MISSED WAS "HEROES AND VILLAINS". GOD BLESS BRIAN WILSON
