repost: VAN DYKE PARKS TO DO RARE LIVE PERFORMANCE AT MISSISSIPPI STUDIOS

Repost from 2010, because it has some interesting quotes, and it might shed a light on why Van's participation on the upcoming 'SMiLE Sessions box' is low key / or maybe publicity is kept low key at his request?

QUOTE:
Also don't count on hearing any songs from "Smile."

"I spent a lifetime of condemnation in the shadow of its incompletion," Parks said.

He calls the finished album (BWPS 2004) "adequate" but bemoans the absence of artist Frank Holmes' original cover art (which inspired the songwriting process, Parks said).
Other than calling him in to finish a few lyrics, Parks said, Wilson's camp didn't consult him on any decisions regarding the finished "Smile."

R.I.P. SOLOMON BURKE, 1940-2010

'The King of Rock And Soul'
Solomon Burke was a minor star if measured solely by chart success, he had five top forty hits in the early 1960s for Atlantic and largely fell into obscurity thereafter, bouncing from label to label throughout the '70s, '80s and '90s.

He also had one of the stranger resumes among those inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was a preacher, an undertaker, a businessman and host of a gospel radio show on top of being the undisputed King of Rock and Soul for nearly five decades. He held the record for most rejections before induction, too.

BEACH BOYS MOVIE SHOOT IN TORONTO?

Dennis, David, Carl, Mike and Brian

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the team behind the Toronto-shot movie version of Hairspray, have joined actor John Stamos in getting the ball rolling on an as yet-untitled project that will use the music of the Beach Boys.

The film isn’t expected to follow in the footsteps of biopics focusing on musicians, like Ray or Walk the Line, instead it will be more in the vein of the stage-musical-turned-movie Mamma Mia! which utilized the music of ABBA to tell a fictional story.

'ADZ'MAY BE STEVENS BEST YET

Sufjan Stevens has a new cd!

Frenetic waves of cascading glitch electronics abruptly end as soon as they seem to start. Swirling psychedelic soundscapes envelope the listener with warmth and somewhere, just outside of the mix, one can hear the familiar comfort and vulnerability of every Sufjan Stevens’ song of the past decade.

SONIC CIRCUITS INTERVIEW: FENNESZ ON SURFING, TECHNOLOGY, AND THE ELEMENTS

Last night’s Sonic Circuits show at the Strathmore Mansion was a treat—and not just because the dark, wooden walls of the arts center’s music room complemented the string-based openers

CHARLES LLOYD ’S NEW QUARTET RELEASES NEW ALBUM (MIRROR) , PLAYS LOBERO THEATRE

This album contains a cover of 'Caroline, No'

Often cited as America’s greatest indigenous art form, jazz wriggles away from any univocal definition, resisting the confines of a single track like water flowing on broken ground.

BRIAN WILSON REACHES BACK FOR 'GERSHWIN' PROJECT

In 2004, Brian Wilson scored a critical and commercial victory by releasing a completed version of "Smile," the legendary "Pet Sounds" follow-up he'd originally begun work on in 1966.

ENDLESS SUMMER: MIKE LOVE ON WHY BEACH BOYS MUSIC HAS OUTLASTED SO MANY OTHERS

QUOTE:
Besides the Everly Brothers and Little Richard, the group Love and the others respected most was The Temptations.

“They were unbelievably great. Ball of Confusion, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Cloud Nine. The Temptations, in my opinion, were on a par with The Beatles and the Beach Boys. They just didn’t get the print we did.”
