Tom Tobben's SMiLE references

Since the article on the website of Van Dyke Parks is 'gone', I'd like to repost it:

Musical, Literary, and Historic References in Brian Wilson's SMiLE

Compiled by Tom Tobben

Van Gogh - Wheatfield with Crows
Vincent Van Gogh - Wheatfield with Crows

Like a fine piece of literature or a Charles Ives symphony, in SMiLE Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks make extensive use of references or allusions to other songs, literature, and American history. And, like America itself, SMiLE is a "melting pot" of many diverse influences uniquely blended together by Brian and Van Dyke into a cohesive whole. These references enrich Brian's masterpiece and extend the themes and imagery of the songs and musical movements beyond the words and melodies themselves, by intrinsically linking them to our rich cultural heritage and important events in our history.

Among the many such touchstones in SMiLE are the following:

The Old Master Painter

Here are the lyrics of the original:
©Beasley Smith (Mus), ©Haven Gillespie (Lyr)

That old master painter from the faraway hills
painted the violets and the daff-o-dills
He put the purple in the twilight haze
then did a rainbow for the rainy days

Dreamed up the murals on the blue summer skies
painted the devil in my darlin's eyes
Captured the dreamer with a thousand thrills
The old master painter from the faraway hills

Then came his masterpiece and when he was through
He smiled down from heaven and he gave me you
What a beautiful job on that wonderful day
That old master painter from the hills far away

Dreamed up the murals on the blue summer skies
painted the devil in my darlin's eyes
Captured the dreamer with a thousand thrills
The old master painter from the faraway hills

Versions exist from Dick Haymes (40s type record on 78 rpm) and Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee...
(I don't know which version is the best or the best known)

Fifteen minutes on the phone with Brian Wilson.
Where do you even begin? And which Brian Wilson are we talking about?

VISUAL ARTIST AND FORMER RECORD PRODUCER DAVID ANDERLE TO EXHIBIT LOS ANGELES-THEMED PAINTINGS

Brian Wilson - 1966David Anderle

During his lengthy and successful career in the West Coast contemporary music scene of the 1960s through the end of the 1990s, David Anderle continually pursued his passion for painting.
“Though I always thought I would quit and paint, and in fact took a number of jobs just to make money to keep painting,” he says, “I started producing and fell in love with working with musicians.”

SUMMER DAYS AND SUMMER NIGHTS

When the time came to reissue Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) on CD in the early 1980s, Capitol Records decided to cut out the songs "Amusement Park U.S.A." and "I'm Bugged at My Old Man" while renaming the LP California Girls after its lead track.
The truncation of The Beach Boys' hefty endowment to pop music is fodder for a thousand stories but this one stings a little than some of the others.

MUSIC OF CALIFORNIA AS DIVERSE AS ITS LANDSCAPE

California has played a prominent role in modern music, producing a long, rich and diverse history of artists over the decades. Rather than just following trends, musicians out of the Golden State have often been on the cutting edge, creating new sounds for others to follow.

WHERE DID CAR SONGS GO?

Back in the mid 50’s through the late 60’s, when rock and roll was in its infancy, singers like Jan and Dean, The Beach Boys, and Ronny and the Daytonas sang about how cool it was to own a fast car.
Hell, the Beach Boys even sang about just the engine in their song called “409″.

WHERE ARE THE BEATLES REISSUES?

Enterprising Fans Take Matters Into Their Own Hands

In an era of declining music sales and rapid technological advancement, it’s still hard to fathom the sorry lot of the Beatles canon.
Not only is the catalog of rock music’s most successful and influential act still not available for legal digital download, for the most part it hasn’t received even the basic remastering afforded pop music acts with a fraction of the Fab Four’s historical importance and consumer clout.
Thus the Beatles catalog continues to be represented by thin-sounding, now two-decade-old digital mastering accomplished at the dawn of the CD era.

USA BREAKS: CHEAP AND CHEERFUL IN CREDIT CRUNCH CALIFORNIA

Quote:

Tougher times of a British hue are, bizarrely, on view at the Mirage hotel.
Here the Cirque du Soleil's show Love, a tribute to The Beatles, opens with a re-creation of the Blitz. Think Michael Jackson's Thriller video meets George Formby - yes, it's truly terrifying.

There are rumours on the Strip that a similar tribute is being planned around the music of The Beach Boys.
Curiously, while The Beach Boys were arguably the nearest thing that America had to The Beatles, there is a noticeable indifference to their achievements.

KARL BARTOS INTERVIEWED: KRAFTWERK AND THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN

Quote:

Speaking about The Beach Boys he said:
"In their songs they managed to concentrate a maximum of fundamental ideas. In a hundred years from now when people want to know what California was like in the 60s, they only have to listen to a single by the Beach Boys."
