Time Of The Session (repost)

Apr 8 2004 -> laweekly.com

From the LA weekly

APRIL 9 -15, 2004

Time of the Session
When the music was fast, and the players anonymous
by Robert Lloyd

Most of the music you will ever hear will be played by people you will never see and whose names you will neither know nor think to ask. It will be recorded in windowless rooms, witnessed sometimes only by an engineer or producer, the now-ancient technology of the overdub making the presence even of other musicians unnecessary. For every superstar singer or guitar heroine whose name adorns a T-shirt or tattoo, there are hundreds whose work is done anonymously, or as good as. Who play their part, collect their pay and go home.

SEVEN MEMORABLE GEORGE GERSHWIN INTERPRETATIONS

Summertime and there's never a shortage of Gershwin performances at pops and jazz concerts across the country.
But who, we wondered, has also "re-imagined" Gershwin in the rock era beyond the song "Summertime," which has been marvelously rendered by Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Bobby Womack and Angelique Kidjo?

Here's a SoundSpike 7 list of impressive Gershwin interpretations in the rock 'n' roll era.

7. "But Not for Me," Elvis Costello (1994)

6. "Embraceable You," Laura Nyro (1994)

5. "It Ain't Necessarily So," Sun Ra & His Arkestra (1960)

4. "I've Got a Crush on You," Bill Frisell & Petra Haden (2003)

3. "Our Love is Here to Stay," Four Freshman (1955)

2. "Someone to Watch Over Me," Jimmy Scott (1992)

1. "I Loves You, Porgy," Nina Simone (1957)

CHICAGO AND ITS ENDURING MUSICAL LEGACY

After the final note of the closing song has ended and the sound of the applause in the concert hall has faded, what ultimate impression does a singer or artist leave that will make his audience remember his performance as a great act?

For the legendary rock band Chicago, it has established an enduring musical legacy for fans to remember it by, foremost of which is its special ability to charm and inspire audiences of all ages and classes with the beauty of its music, the novelty of its style and the world-class quality of its act.

DEFINING THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JT vocal jazz columnist blogs on the canon for singers

QUOTE:
But I have to quibble with such restrictive parameters. If 1960 (or so) is the cutoff, is most of the marvelous work of Cy Coleman to be omitted? What of Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Johnny Mandel, Bacharach & David and Stephen Sondheim?

And that’s just the tip of the post-1960 iceberg, representing composers and lyricists who, by and large, carried the torch lit by Porter, Berlin and such. What about those who, from the dawn of the rock ‘n’ roll era onward, have further defined the art of songwriting? Are they less “great” than their predecessors?

I’d argue that Lieber & Stoller, Bob Dylan, Gerry Goffin, Carole King, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Donald Fagen, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Webb, Brian Wilson, Janis Joplin and Tom Waits, to name but a few, are equally deserving of inclusion;

THE MAN BEHIND THE BRITISH INVASION

What would the music industry look like without Sid Bernstein?
We might have been spared the recent Depeche Mode concert at Ramat Gan Stadium, for one, since it was his idea to hold rock concerts in sports stadiums.
And perhaps Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys would not have worked so hard on the fantastic harmonies in "Pet Sounds," because he would not have been familiar with the Beatles, the inspiration for and main catalyst of the work, who Bernstein first brought to the United States. Many more years might have passed before white American audiences were exposed to Ray Charles and James Brown had Bernstein not been the first to take the risk with them.

+ Sid brought the first bands of the British invasion to America which included the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Moody Blues, The Animals, The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark Five, Manfred Mann and Gerry and the Pacemakers. Among the groups he managed were The Rascals, Melba Moore, Laura Branigan and Phoebe Snow. He introduced ABBA to America...the list goes on and on.
