QUARRINGTON TRIBUTE INVOLVES MANY

QUOTE:

A Renaissance man in the most hands-on sense, Quarrington was an accomplished non-fiction writer and novelist, musician, screenwriter and educator.
He's best known for his novel Whale Music which is loosely based on the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson.
Whale Music won the 1989 Governor General's Award and became a film by the same name in 1994.

THE MAN BEHIND THE BRITISH INVASION

What would the music industry look like without Sid Bernstein?
We might have been spared the recent Depeche Mode concert at Ramat Gan Stadium, for one, since it was his idea to hold rock concerts in sports stadiums.
And perhaps Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys would not have worked so hard on the fantastic harmonies in "Pet Sounds," because he would not have been familiar with the Beatles, the inspiration for and main catalyst of the work, who Bernstein first brought to the United States. Many more years might have passed before white American audiences were exposed to Ray Charles and James Brown had Bernstein not been the first to take the risk with them.

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1148560.html

+ Sid brought the first bands of the British invasion to America which included the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Moody Blues, The Animals, The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark Five, Manfred Mann and Gerry and the Pacemakers. Among the groups he managed were The Rascals, Melba Moore, Laura Branigan and Phoebe Snow. He introduced ABBA to America...the list goes on and on.

SONGWRITERS FROM THE 805 ARE WELL-REPRESENTED IN NEW CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL BOOK

Start typing the words “the rose” into Google, and before you can even hit enter on your keyboard, the search engine generates a list of things it thinks you’re searching for.
Topping the list is not “the Rose Bowl” (No. 2) or “the Rose Parade” (it didn’t even make the cut), but “the rose lyrics.”

IT'S BACK TO THE BEACH WITH WILSON

In the pantheon of great American composers, a few names immediately come to mind.
Irving Berlin. Cole Porter. George Gershwin.

But Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson?
Gershwin’s estate certainly believes Wilson belongs on that list. Last month, the composer’s family enlisted the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer to complete some of Gershwin’s unfinished compositions, song fragments left scattered about after Gershwin’s death in 1937.

AL JARDINE TALKS ABOUT LIFE INSIDE THE BEACH BOYS IN REVEALING INTERVIEW

Interviews with members of the Beach Boys over the years, like a lot of celebrity interviews, are notable for sticking to the company line.

But in the August issue of Record Collector, which still can be found on newsstands in the U.S. if you hurry, Al Jardine talks openly and honestly about the group in an interview with Ken Sharp.
