The Beach Boys/Dennis Wilson - Cabinessence/Truck Drivin' Man

1966

Truck drivin' man do what you can
High-tail your load off the road
Out of night-life, I'm a gas man

I don't believe I gotta grieve
I'm out of luck
With a buck and a booth
Catchin' on to the truth
In the vast* past, last gasp

Right in the dust, trust that you must
Catch as catch can

(*sung as 'van')

Tom Tobben's SMiLE references

Since the article on the website of Van Dyke Parks is 'gone', I'd like to repost it:

Musical, Literary, and Historic References in Brian Wilson's SMiLE

Compiled by Tom Tobben

Like a fine piece of literature or a Charles Ives symphony, in SMiLE Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks make extensive use of references or allusions to other songs, literature, and American history. And, like America itself, SMiLE is a "melting pot" of many diverse influences uniquely blended together by Brian and Van Dyke into a cohesive whole. These references enrich Brian's masterpiece and extend the themes and imagery of the songs and musical movements beyond the words and melodies themselves, by intrinsically linking them to our rich cultural heritage and important events in our history.

Among the many such touchstones in SMiLE are the following:

Hi All,

Peter, I had to say "thank you" for your kind words. Mac and I are having great fun researching and writing, and (I know I can speak for Mac here as well) we're grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the book...which is sure to be a cornerstone of any SMiLE fan's library.

Thanks to CC, too, for thinking of me.

gf: Thanks for the Les Paul suggestion. I will pursue it.

I keep an eye on the conversation around here, but lately the tone of that conversation has been a bit off-putting. The generous spirit of collaborative discovery appears to have ebbed. Take a spin through some of the old saved threads, and maybe you'll see what I mean. Too many posts are met with derisive, contemptuous, smarmy reactions; and many posts are devoted to excessively narrow, technical points that don't seem to be made in the context of an overall "human" appreciation of the SMiLE music. Some days - please excuse the strained metaphor - I feel like a bunch of vivisectionists has taken over a community built by and for a group of animal lovers. No point in saying any more; I wouldn't want my comments to be taken as personal criticisms (they're not intended as such).

This thread is very interesting. The idea of an "influences" compilation is an excellent one, and I think it might make for an enjoyable CD. Here are some specific suggestions:

THE PUZZLE OF BRIAN WILSON’S SMILE

IN A RADIO PROGRAM broadcast on BBC Radio 1 in the early 1990s, Beach Boys band member Bruce Johnston was asked about the status of Brian Wilson’s legendary unfinished album Smile. This is what he said:

"It’s not far from completion. That could be completed if he wanted to put the energy into it. I don’t think I’d attempt to do it. ’Cause it’s not my work, you know. I’d rather he did it. It’s in fragments. It’s just a bunch of fragments. And they’re really good, really superb . . . fragments."

WON’T COME BACK FROM DEAD MAN’S CURVE

THE LEGEND OF DEAD MAN’S CURVE

It was 44 years ago today, April 12, 1966, that Jan Berry, the creative genius behind the singing duo- Jan & Dean- suffered his near-deadly auto-accident.

It would eerily portentously take place just a short distance from Dead Man’s Curve in Los Angeles,California, two years after Jan & Dean released the hit single of the same title.

AND THE GREATEST YEAR IN MUSIC IS...

Rock´s Backpages

What was the greatest single year in music?
This question often comes up in my mind. Don't ask me why.
All I know is I'm fascinated by the fact that certain years produce a huge number of songs that still mesmerize us decades later.
Why is it that all years are not created equal?
Why did some years produce one awesome album after another?

ALL BUT DONE

By the time "Good Vibrations" had hit No.1 at the end of 1966, Brian was firmly committed to extending pop's boundaries as far as he could.
Gathering around him a coterie of brilliant, precocious scene-makers—Van Dyke Parks, Loren Schwartz, Danny Hutton, David Anderle, writers Jules Siegel and Paul Jay Robbins—he dug in deep and all but kissed goodbye to the Beach Boys of old.

Most important among these men was Parks, the diminutive, bespectacled keyboard player whom he'd first met at Terry Melcher’s house on Cielo Drive in February 1966.

VISUAL ARTIST AND FORMER RECORD PRODUCER DAVID ANDERLE TO EXHIBIT LOS ANGELES-THEMED PAINTINGS

Brian Wilson - 1966David Anderle

During his lengthy and successful career in the West Coast contemporary music scene of the 1960s through the end of the 1990s, David Anderle continually pursued his passion for painting.
“Though I always thought I would quit and paint, and in fact took a number of jobs just to make money to keep painting,” he says, “I started producing and fell in love with working with musicians.”

CHILD IS THE FATHER OF THE MAN

Brian Wilson threw away his candybar and ate the wrapper.

Brian Wilson lopes onstage at Disney Hall and faces his audience. He’s nervous, but he’s been meditating for an hour backstage in order to get a handle on it. He doesn’t feel like he has to throw up anymore.
Anyway, he’s got his faithful crew to back him up on this, a 10-piece-plus ensemble of strings, brass, percussion, keyboards, guitars and singers who will give his long-lost Smile the loving and detailed attention it needs. He knows he’s in good company. He’ll be fine. So will we.

PURPLE CHICK PRESENTS: THE BEACH BOYS SMILE

Intro: After the official release of Brian Wilson Presents Smile (BWPS) in 2004, you would have thought that the last thing I would have wanted to hear was yet another Smile mix by a fan.
I've heard Smile done just about every way possible in fan mixes.
