'AGONY' AUNT: PHIL SPECTOR GETS A SYMPATHETIC EAR

Documentary

Were it not for the two murder trials of music producer Phil Spector — he of the Wall of Sound and the spectacularly big hair — it's unlikely that Vikram Jayanti's made-for-British-TV documentary about him would ever have made it into American movie theaters.

'MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN': BRIAN WILSON AND GEORGE GERSHWIN

CD promotional interview

The album title alone is enough to make pop-music pundits drool, pairing two of the 20th century's most celebrated tunesmiths: Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin.

The recording itself, which arrives Aug. 17, was a "labor of love" for Wilson, 68, who was a George Gershwin fan long before he was a Beach Boy or had even discovered the piano.
"Before I could play music, I could hear it," Wilson says, and Gershwin became a hero when he first heard Rhapsody in Blue at about age 4.

NEW MUSIC SPOTLIGHT ON WALRI

Check out their great single "Tinkle Sprinkle/Cotton Candy" (2009)

I think Scott McMicken (Guitarist and co-frontman of the tremendous Dr. Dog) said it best when describing Walri… “These guys are head scratchingly good”.

This is true on two levels: a) they really are; and b) it’s a total head scratcher as to why they are not a huge band, at least in the “indie” scene anyway.

THE WIZARDING WORLD OF LES PAUL

(Among many things he invented also the harmonica holder.)

At the age of 10, Les Paul encountered his first musical problem.
You see, he had been playing the harmonica for a couple of years and had gotten pretty good.
But his new love was the guitar – specifically an acoustic one he had bought with money saved from his paper route in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

WON’T COME BACK FROM DEAD MAN’S CURVE

THE LEGEND OF DEAD MAN’S CURVE

It was 44 years ago today, April 12, 1966, that Jan Berry, the creative genius behind the singing duo- Jan & Dean- suffered his near-deadly auto-accident.

It would eerily portentously take place just a short distance from Dead Man’s Curve in Los Angeles,California, two years after Jan & Dean released the hit single of the same title.
