GRANDADDY'S FORMER FRONTMAN EASES BACK INTO LIFE ON THE ROAD

The situation was symbolic.

Jason Lytle was out of reach - because of sporadic cell-phone service - as he traveled west through Wyoming.

Since Grandaddy, his acclaimed and trailblazing Modesto rock band, broke up in 2006, Lytle - the five-man group's songwriter, visionary and main artistic force - has been living in self-imposed (often blissful) isolation in Bozeman, Mont.

Now, the 40-year-old Modesto native is back on the road, touring modestly and edging carefully back into a lifestyle that once burned him out.
